The Phantom Blade Zero Sha-Chi is the single combat resource, shown as a yellow bar under the health bar. It plays the role that stamina, posture and an ultimate meter would fill separately in a typical soulslike: one pool that both offence and defence draw from. Refilling it is cheap, spending it is where your damage comes from, and running it to empty is the worst state in the game.

  • Gain it: light-attack combo hits, a perfect parry, a Ghoststep triggered by a parry or dodge, or swapping primary weapons, which restores the whole bar.
  • Spend it on: Sha-Chi combos and heavy attacks, blocking, Phantom Edge abilities, and Power Surge, which costs one Sha-Chi Essence point instead.

How to gain Phantom Blade Zero Sha-Chi

Five things put bar back into it, and the last one is by far the most useful:

  1. Light attack combos refill it on hit and cost nothing themselves.
  2. A perfect parry costs nothing and drains the enemy's Sha-Chi heavily while restoring yours.
  3. A Ghoststep triggered by a parry or dodge grants a bar plus a damage buff.
  4. Switching primary weapon fully restores it. This is the highest-leverage action in the game, because it turns a spent bar into a free combo extension.
  5. Passive regeneration exists, but it is too slow to plan around.

How to spend it

ActionWhat it costsNotes
Sha-Chi comboA large chunkYour primary damage
Heavy attackA chunkAlso unbalances enemies and breaks guards
BlockingDrains continuouslyEvery blocked hit takes an extra bite; blocking a Brutal Move takes a large chunk
Phantom Edge abilityA chunk
Power SurgeOne Sha-Chi Essence pointIgnores the enemy's defence, so it is best spent into a stagger

Essence builds from normal attacks, parries and Ghoststeps. That is the important relationship: successful defence is what funds your strongest offence, so a parry does not only protect you, it pays for the burst that comes after it.

The enemy bar is the same bar

Enemies carry their own Sha-Chi bar, and depleting it staggers them, opens the punish window and allows an execution. Guard break works the same way against shielded enemies, and a guard break can also grant invincibility frames on some weapons. Reading the enemy's bar is how you know when to stop attacking and start punishing.

Running your own bar to empty is the worst state in the game: Soul is staggered and vulnerable, and a hit taken with an empty bar is a full-damage guard break even if you were holding block.

Spending it well

Fast weapons — twin blades and one-handed swords — rebuild the bar quicker than slow heavy weapons, so the weapon you choose changes how forgiving your resource management is. The builds page covers the accessories and Abilities that reduce what you spend, including Shenji's Ring, which lowers the Sha-Chi cost of blocking, and Lingran's Pendant, which makes Sha-Chi combos cheaper.
