The Phantom Blade Zero tips and tricks that actually change a run are about three habits: read the attack colour before you commit, never hold block, and swap weapons instead of fighting through an empty bar. Everything else is refinement. Here is the list, ordered by how much damage it saves you.

  • Read the attack colour. Blue is parryable, red is unblockable and has to be dodged. If you are unsure, dodging is the safe default.
  • Never hold block. A held block drains Sha-Chi on every hit, so the meter runs out before the enemy does.
  • Swap weapons constantly. Switching fully restores Sha-Chi and triggers a quick attack, so a swap can extend a combo that would otherwise run dry.
  • Stop button-mashing. Every attack has commitment frames, and the biggest beginner killer is spamming light attacks into a Killer Move.
  • Match the weapon to the enemy. One fast weapon for pressure, one heavy weapon for armoured or stagger-resistant enemies.
  • Spend Remnant Dust carefully. Exploration supplies plenty of it, so do not dump it into shop materials.
  • Explore each region before moving on. Bells let you fast travel back and enemies do not respawn, so backtracking is cheap.
  • Interact with everything. Book pages and wall writings give out Remnant Dust for free.
  • Listen for jingling coins. That sound marks the jade chests Quick Hand Zhang wants collected.
  • Assassinate from behind. It thins a group before the fight even starts, and ranged enemies should be locked on to.
  • Spend resources aggressively in multi-phase fights. A cleared phase stays cleared after a death.
  • Talk to NPCs before moving on. The map does not mark quests until they are active, and the Journal shows red entries in each new region.

The Phantom Blade Zero tips and tricks that change a run

Switching primary weapon fully restores Sha-Chi, triggers an automatic quick attack and puts the weapon you left away on a short cooldown. That means a swap is both a resource refill and a second moveset, which is why the best players swap constantly instead of trying to fight through an empty bar. The Sha-Chi page covers the rest of the resource rules.

Weapons for the enemy in front of you

Break the white defensive bar first, then swap to the fast weapon for the punish window. Use Power Surge when the enemy is not staggered, since it is unblockable and shreds Sha-Chi. Shielded enemies want guard break; fleshy enemies want bleed.

Reading the map and the Journal

Map markers turn red when a path is blocked until you have the Phantom Edge that opens it, and green once you do. White and purple markers are side content, and purple quests in particular are tied to the best ending. Missing side quests can lock rewards permanently.

New Phantom Edges can open obstacles in earlier maps, so revisit old regions after acquiring one.

Bosses and the length of a run

Boss fights resume from the phase where you fell rather than from the start, so a long multi-phase fight is not lost because of one mistake. Main story runs take about 20 to 25 hours, roughly 30 to 40 with side content, and 40 to 55 for a full completion. No prior Phantom Blade game is needed.

Running the campaign

Exploration only pays off if you do it in the right order, because a few quests are gone for good the moment you kill the wrong boss. The walkthrough gives the region order and the four fights whose kills permanently fail side quests.
