The Phantom Blade Zero sixty-six days mode is the game's permadeath challenge, and it is the only difficulty that has to be unlocked. Soul has sixty-six days to live, and the mode gives you exactly 66 deaths in total — each death costs one of them. When the counter reaches zero, the run ends permanently in a game over and the save is erased.
The Phantom Blade Zero sixty-six days mode rules
- 66 deaths, one run. Every death takes a day off the counter. At zero, the run is over and the save is gone.
- You pick it at the start. It is chosen when you begin a new game; you cannot switch into it, or out of it, in the middle of a run.
- Hellwalker enemies, exactly. It uses identical enemy AI and statistics with no gap between the two modes, so 66 Days is Hellwalker difficulty with a death budget rather than a separate balancing pass.
- Its own save. The mode auto-saves at Bells, offers no manual saving or reloading, and does not touch your main save. A failed 66 Days run never costs you your normal progression.
- Unlock it by finishing the game once. It becomes available after you complete the story, and you select it when you start a new game from the difficulty selection.
What it actually feels like
The developers have been publicly candid about how hard it is. S-GAME's director joked that many journalists who tried the mode had already burned around twenty of their retries in the first two chapters alone, and that nobody on the team had completed a run without dying at that point.
That number is the useful part. Twenty deaths in two chapters means the budget for the whole game is roughly three times the deaths you would expect in those chapters, which in practice means the early sections need to be nearly clean. Every boss attempt counts, and the parry timing that carries a normal run is what saves the day here.
After the credits
66 Days slots into the post-game loop. After the credits you can start a New Game Plus run — speak to Inanis after the ending, then fast travel from any Bell to the Puppet Cell at the Mountain of Imprisonment. Equipment, progression items, ability training and the Archives carry over, while quests, maps, key items and the remaining days reset.
There is no new story content locked behind NG+. It exists so you can replay the campaign with late-game weapons and builds, and 66 Days mode is the challenge option available once you have finished the game at least once.
The New Game Plus page has the full carry-over split, and the note on what the sources disagree about when you finish the game.
Finishing the story is also what decides how a run ends. The endings page covers the eight outcomes, the true ending checklist and how to recover a run that ended on the wrong one.
