Tensei Brave has 8 save slots and no autosave, so every save is manual. If all eight slots are already full, starting a new game from the title screen overwrites slot 1 automatically — the developer's own controls page states it as a warning: ※セーブスロットが全てうまっている場合は、自動的に一番初めのデータに上書きされます. SAVE and LOAD are on the conversation screen and in the menu, and both open a list you click a slot on. There are places where you cannot save at all, and one place the developer has warned that saving causes bugs.
The save rules at a glance
| Question | Answer |
|---|---|
| How many slots are there? | 8 — the developer's launch-day post of 5 Dec 2022, with no later revision |
| Is there an autosave? | No. Nothing is written unless you save it yourself |
| All 8 slots full and you press New Game? | Slot 1 is overwritten automatically |
| Where do you save and load? | The conversation screen and the menu |
| Can you save during a dungeon? | Not where the MENU禁止 icon is showing — the menu cannot be opened there |
| Can you save from the album? | No. The album screen has no save entry |
| You go back to the title from the menu | Unsaved progress is discarded |
| Saving inside the Recollection Room | Possible, but the developer has warned it causes bugs and said they plan to disable it there |
| Does a game update keep your save? | No. An update starts from a clean save |
Where you can save, and where you cannot
- The conversation screen. SAVE and LOAD are reachable here, so a save between story beats is the routine action and the cheapest moment to take one.
- The menu. The same two entries and the same slot list.
- A dungeon section with the MENU禁止 icon showing. That icon means the menu is blocked for that section, so you cannot open the menu and therefore cannot save inside it. Clear the section and save on the other side.
- The album (Recollection Room). The album screen has no save entry at all, so there is nothing to press there.
- Going back to the title from the menu. That discards whatever you have not saved, so save before you quit rather than after.
The one place the developer asked you not to save
Saving or loading inside the Recollection Room is the one place the developer has warned leads to bugs. On 8 Dec 2022 they said they planned to disable saving and loading there. If you have just been in the album, leave the Recollection Room first and save from the menu instead. The CG gallery guide covers the room itself and the album bugs that were fixed in 1.0.9.7.3.
A routine that does not lose progress
- Save on every conversation screen you pass. It is right there and it costs nothing.
- Check which slot you are about to write to. With 8 slots, one wrong click can overwrite a run you wanted to keep.
- Do not keep a run you care about in slot 1. A New Game with all 8 slots full takes slot 1 automatically, so leave that slot for throwaway runs.
- Copy your save folders after each session — the four folders are listed below.
- Expect a clean save after a patch. The developer's standing answer to "can I carry my save over when I update?" is no: the data cannot be brought across from an earlier version. The version history page keeps the current data version and every patch that has shipped.
How to back up a save
The developer's own save-migration section backs a save up by copying four folders, whole, rather than by picking individual files out of them:
| Folder | How to copy it |
|---|---|
Enviroment_SaveData | whole folder |
SaveData | whole folder |
Item_Data | whole folder |
SaveScreentmp | whole folder |
Copy all four into a separate folder outside the game directory, keep them together, and restore by copying them back the same way. A half-copied save is a broken save, so copy the folders, not files.
Where the developer says this
- The developer's controls page (操作方法) carries the full-slots overwrite warning quoted above, the MENU禁止 rule and the SAVE and LOAD entries for the conversation screen and the menu.
- The developer's version index (バージョン情報) is where the current data version shows up first, and the site's own version history page translates it into English.
- The developer's public bug-report thread carries the standing "can I carry my save over when I update?" answer and the handled-fault list.
- The developer's DLsite inquiry form is the route for a DLsite build; the support form on the developer's own site covers the other builds.
- The launch-night Steam curator review of 23 Oct 2026 warns other players in the same terms: remember to save often, this thing has no autosave.
