The Find The Needle demo is free on Steam as its own listing, Find The Needle Demo, app 5165210. It launched on September 10, 2026 and it contains the whole hay-clearing and automation loop. There is no time limit and no fixed end point, so the demo lasts exactly as long as the factory you build.
Find The Needle demo: how to install it
- Open the Find The Needle Demo page on Steam — app 5165210, listed separately from the paid game.
- Choose Install Demo. Wishlisting the full game does not install the demo for you.
- Play from the demo entry in your library. The demo and the full game are on the same Steam app family, so your library and friends list are shared.
The full game is a separate paid listing, app 5160800, which Steam currently shows as coming soon for November 6, 2026 in Early Access. Until then the demo is the only way to play. The demo supports 17 languages with interface text, full audio and subtitles, and it is single-player on Windows.
Release and Early Access has the full game's launch date, the fact that no purchase price is published yet, and what the developer says will be in the Early Access build. If you want to play with other people before that, the game is officially single-player but there is a community co-op mod that runs on this demo — multiplayer and co-op mods has the install steps and the keys.
Before you launch it, check the system requirements — integrated graphics are not supported and will crash, and Steam publishes no Steam Deck verdict for either listing, so handheld play is unconfirmed.
How long the demo lasts
There is no time limit and no fixed end, so the length is set by how far you push the factory:
- The first stretch is manual. Roughly 60 minutes pass before anything can genuinely be automated, and it takes longer than that to clear the 10 delivery quests that unlock all the available tech.
- After that it becomes an exercise in waiting on throughput. At maximum level one robotic arm extracts about 3,500 hay strands per minute, which works out at about 48 hours to clear 10,000,000 hay.
- One recorded playthrough finished around the 47-hour mark with roughly 20 arms working and 8.5 million hay still left, about 2 more hours at best, because the arms have to be moved closer together as the pile shrinks.
- The haystack is far larger in practice than the opening pile. One run reported 315 million hay remaining, because the pile size grows as you progress.
The money side of those numbers is in making money and the purchase order.
What you can finish inside the demo
- The whole core loop: the pile, the manual tools, belts, machines, power, the production lines and the needle collection.
- The six needles in the pile. They behave more like collectible badges with small permanent buffs than major power spikes, and each one goes into the needle cabinet.
- The 10 delivery quests, which unlock all the available tech in the demo.
- A new map through the delivery board. Clearing the pile and collecting all six needles lets you use Prestige - New map to pick a new load — Standard, Large, Huge or Mountain. It writes a backup before the map changes, keeps your tools, unlocks and purchased upgrades, and asks for the six needles again in the next cycle.
- The ending. Closing the cabinet doors reveals a large red button with a countdown, which is the game's deliberately unexplained ending.
A hatch under the pile leads underground, but it does nothing in the demo. One player reported completing a 300 million+ mountain and calling themselves a multimillionaire with only the six needles, though the developers had said the mountain could not be finished.
Before you start experimenting, back the save up — the copy takes seconds and saves a lot of pain.
