The Find The Needle research tree upgrade order that works is: hand tools first, then transport, then power, then detection. Each step below names the nodes to take and the reason for the order, so you can buy one group at a time instead of draining your cash on scattered nodes that do nothing yet.
Find The Needle research tree upgrade order: hand tools first
- Take the Pitchfork and the Wheelbarrow.
- Spend a few points on stamina consumption and increased quantity picked.
This is the smallest possible version of the game that produces income, and everything after it costs real money. Buying a machine you cannot feed is the most common way to stall the first hour.
Transport and processing next
- Unlock the Compressor plans so you can produce hay bales.
- Add several Bale Presses.
- Take the Faster Bale Press node — $50 with 0 of 6 ranks bought, next to Larger Bale Chamber at $50 with 0 of 6 and Raise Bale Quality at $50 with 0 of 5 in the Compressor Upgrades group.
Bales sell for significantly more than raw hay, but the process is slow, so several presses beat one fast press. Which product to aim for after that is covered in hay products and profitability.
Power after transport
- Add the Generator.
- Branch Power Poles outward from it.
Every powered machine needs a pole connection before it will run, so a machine without a pole is a machine you paid for and cannot use. The full wiring pattern is in the power grid setup.
Scanners last
Add Scanners on every lane, after every machine — and add them last because they slow the flow. A scanner placed early in the lane caps the throughput of everything downstream of it. How scanners actually flag a needle is the next thing to know once you place them.
Check the live card before buying
Compare each card's price with the one in your own build before you buy. Demo updates have changed prices and research levels since older screenshots were taken, so treat any figure you read elsewhere as a starting point rather than a price.
You can see what each branch unlocks in the research tree walkthrough, and how scanners work once you place them.
