The same ingredients produce different dishes on each appliance, so a dish you "cannot make" is often just a dish you are making on the wrong appliance. The camp appliances have their own page in the camp cooking guide.

Two ways to cook

You can pick a recipe you already know from the kitchen notebook in your farmhouse and cook it directly, or you can throw ingredients together yourself and hope the combination matches a registered recipe.

When you cook a registered combination for the first time, the dish is the successful one. When the combination is not a registered recipe you receive a Hodgepodge meal instead. A Hodgepodge is still edible and restores stamina, but it is not good enough to save as a recipe, so it does not fill the notebook.

So the notebook is the reference, and the free-form cooking is for when you already know what you want.

Every dish is tied to a tool

The community Recipes Guide lists the full set under ten headings, and the Saucepan list is the biggest: Chocolate Fondue, Fresh Cheese, Hard Cheese, Hot Chocolate, Hot Milk, Soy Milk, the eight jams and marmalades, Stew, Truffle Soup, four mushroom stews, Black Tea, Caffe Latte, Chamomile Tea, Coffee, Maple Tea, Milk Tea and the four tofu dishes.

Frying Pan 1 and Frying Pan 2 cover French Toast (Egg + Milk + Maple Syrup + Baguette), Fried Egg, Open Omelet, Truffle Fried Egg and the noodle and pasta dishes such as Creamed Shrimp Pasta. Stockpot covers chowders, soups and stews such as Bean Chowder, Fish Chowder, Borscht, Corn Potage Soup, Gazpacho, Watermelon Gazpacho, Minestrone, Pumpkin Potage Soup, Ratatouille, Ribollita, Vegetable Pot-au-Feu and Vichyssoise.

The Frying Pan 2 distinction matters for one recipe in particular — jambalaya is a Frying Pan 2 dish and will not come out of Frying Pan 1. The three camp appliances are covered on the camp cooking page.

Two-step dishes marked (Dish)

Where a recipe is written as "(Dish)" the base dish must be cooked first and the extra ingredient added afterwards to convert it: Stew plus Energy Mushroom gives Energy Mushroom Stew.

That applies to Stew into Truffle Soup and the four mushroom stews, and it is the reason some combinations fail if you try to slot everything in at once. The other well-known (Dish) entry is Fire Jambalaya, which is Jambalaya plus a fire item — the full list is on the jambalaya page.

Extra ingredients and star rating

Star rank is separate from whether you know the recipe. The kitchen's Extra Ingredient function raises the star rating of a finished dish: recooking an Apple Jam Baguette with a 3-star Milk or a 3-star Egg can push a 0- or 1-star dish up to 2 stars, and it may take a few attempts before the boost lands.

Several villagers ask for 2-star dishes by name, so this matters for story requests as well as for the Buonissimo! achievement. The exact request that needs a 2-star dish is on the villager requests page, and the Unusual Taste achievement is for successfully cooking with any of the additional ingredients.
