The max level for a merc in Zombie Assault: Resurgence has never been published: the developers say abilities keep improving all the way to the maximum character level, but the number itself has never been given, and the store page does not mention a level cap either. So the honest answer is that the cap is unknown, and what you can rely on are the level numbers that have actually appeared in the game.
What the launch build documents about the max level
- The demo caps player level at 12. That was the Next Fest demo, and the demo is still available as a trial version of the full game.
- The second public playtest capped all three classes at rank 10, with the third ability unlocking at rank 10.
- Level 33 is confirmed reachable. The Steam achievement 333 requires reaching reputation level 33 with all three character classes, so 33 exists in the launch build. It is not stated to be the cap.
- The in-game HUD shows the current level next to an XP progress bar, so your own merc's level is always visible while you play.
Treat 33 as the highest confirmed level rather than as a ceiling, and expect the real cap to be confirmed only when the developers publish it.
What each level actually unlocks
Level is the gate for several systems, which is why the missing cap matters:
- Bounty slots. You start with a limited number of bounty slots and gain more by levelling.
- Abilities. Each activated ability unlocks automatically at a set character level, and it improves passively every level from there.
- Weapon drops. Drops are based on your individual level rather than your squad's level, so a solo player gets the same rarity of drops as a full squad.
- Vendor access is a separate track. Deeper vendor stock and manufacturer equipment unlock as your standing rises, not as your level does.
The ability side of that list is the most immediate: the level you are at decides which of your three activated abilities exist and how strong they are, and the abilities page lists all nine with how they upgrade.
Reputation level, character level and vendor standing
Three different numbers are easy to mix up in this game:
- Character level is per class and drives skill points, ability unlocks and your drop rarity.
- Reputation level is the wider account track, and it is what the level 33 achievement is measured on, across all three classes at once.
- Vendor standing is a separate per-manufacturer reputation track that decides which stock a Vendor will sell you. It is raised by manufacturer bounties, not by levelling.
If your goal is deeper vendor stock rather than a stronger merc, the track to work on is standing, and the vendors page explains how that unlocks tiers.
