FINAL FANTASY RESONANCE has three difficulty settings — Casual, Normal and Expert — and they change nothing about the game itself. No enemy level moves, no quest or boss is locked behind a setting, no trophy asks for one, and EXP and gil are identical on all three. What changes is how long every fight takes, and one reward.

The FINAL FANTASY RESONANCE difficulty settings, side by side

The setting screen itself says that content is the same for all difficulties, and it is true. Difficulty never changes enemy or hero levels either, so an Expert enemy at level 30 is still level 30 — it just hits harder, acts faster and is harder to break.

What the numbers do to a fight

Here are the chapter 1 bosses at each setting, HP first and stagger gauge second:

BossCasualNormalExpert
Belmodar, level 41,200 / 582,000 / 1453,200 / 232
Hell's Rider, level 62,400 / 804,000 / 2006,400 / 320
The Hunger rematch, level 104,200 / 1807,000 / 45011,200 / 720
Siren, level 1112,000 / 22020,000 / 55032,000 / 880
The Marauder, optional18,000 / 24030,000 / 60048,000 / 960

Three consequences are worth planning around. Expert enemies have 1.6x the HP while you deal 0.8x the damage, so a boss takes roughly twice the work it does on Normal — and its stagger gauge is also 1.6x, so the fight changes shape rather than merely taking longer. Casual cuts Siren's gauge to 220, which a party with Lightning breaks in a round or two.

Casual costs you nothing

Because EXP and gil never move between difficulties, dropping to Casual costs you no progress at all. That makes it the right answer whenever one specific boss has become a wall: switch down, clear it, and switch back. You can change the setting from the Options menu at any time, before or after a fight. The full weakness and gauge numbers for every story boss are on the bosses page.

The one reward difficulty changes

Mastery Points are the only thing that scales. Casual pays the same as Normal, and Expert pays 1.5x. Since Mastery Points are the currency for Mastery Rank, and Mastery Rank is what unlocks a Vision's abilities and its Spirit, Expert is the setting to farm on — but only if you can handle the extra enemy HP and the extra gauge. Where to farm them fastest, and which monsters to kill for each chapter, is on the farming page.
