Harvest Moon: Echoes of Teradea crop mutation is soil-specific: which crop mutates, and into what, depends on the farm you plant it on. That single rule explains the whole system, including why the same bell pepper seed gives you Magic, Bitter or White.

Harvest Moon: Echoes of Teradea crop mutation and which soil it needs

FarmFieldsTotal plots
Bloomfield4 fields of 30, 18, 48 and 108204
Tidewind1 field of 5454
Maplehill2 fields of 49 + 4998
Quarrytop2 fields of 25 + 2550
Harvest Moon garden, Forest of Echoes2 large fields—

This is why the plot count matters: a farm with 50 plots produces three of a rare mutation far more slowly than one with 204.

Which store sells which seed

StoreHours
Bloomfield General Store9 AM to 6 PM, closed Thursday
Tidewind, Eileen's General Store8 AM to 6 PM, closed Tuesday
Maplehill, Maple MartAlways open
Quarrytop, Heather's General Store9 AM to 6 PM, closed Tuesday
Traveling MerchantAlways open, and some crops only appear when the merchant is at a particular map point

Store hours are worth memorising because a wasted trip means a wasted day. Where the fertiliser you need for the harder mutations comes from is on the soil and fertilizer page.

Desert and volcano mutations

Desert and volcano mutations are special. You must apply Desert Fertilizer or Volcano Fertilizer to the crop daily, and the crop can be planted on any of the normal farms.

Fertilizing every day is what works, although the mutation sometimes succeeds without it. Two practical tips from the community guide: keep bought seeds in storage in case a flower fails to mutate and you want to try again, and separate desert and volcano mutations by at least one plot so the two fertilisers do not get mixed up.

One crop is genuinely awkward: Queen of the Night and all of its mutations only bloom at night and wilt the next day, so plant them next to your house.

What each Colorway and unlock needs

Mutated crops are the currency for a long list of unlocks, which is why farming them deliberately beats farming whatever happens to sprout:

  • Bloomfield Colorway — 3 Blue Marguerite, 3 Salad Onion and 3 Eclipse.
  • Tidewind Colorway — 3 Sunlight Pansy, 3 Blue Hibiscus and 3 Purple Marguerite.
  • Maplehill Colorway — 3 each of Flowing Clouds, Snow Moon, Clear Water, Pink Orchid Cactus and Rising Sun.
  • Quarrytop Colorway — 3 each of Blue Rose, Fire Lily, King of Roses and Snow White Pansy.
  • Maple Mart furniture — 5 each of Blackmore, Incredible Sunflower, Lava Daisy and Rock Daisy for bed styles, 10 each of Moulin Rouge, Devil's Trumpet and Angel's Trumpet for floors, 10 Moon River for carpet and 3 Snow Carrot for the refrigerator.
  • The main quest — 5 each of Magic Bell Pepper, Bitter Bell Pepper and White Bell Pepper.
  • Harvest Goddess Statues — 3 each of Alraune, Desert Lettuce, Maiden's Heart and Princess's Eye.

The bell pepper trio is the clearest example of the rule: all three are Yellow Bell Pepper mutations, and the farm you plant them on decides which one you get — Bloomfield gives Magic, Tidewind Bitter and Quarrytop White. Where those farms are, and how to move between them, is on the town plots page.
