Probably Stolen display case is the single most important fixture in the shop: it generates extra customers. Merchandise placed in it creates additional buyers whose want matches the items' tags, and a display sign item replaces a random normal customer with a seller instead. The rule that catches new players is timing — anything added to the case after you raise the shutter does not count until the next day.
Probably Stolen Display Case: What The Window Does
Extra random normal customers scale with your shop:
| Factor | Effect on extra customers |
|---|---|
| Store attractiveness | +1 at 200, +2 at 250, +3 at 500 |
| Lower-level reputation | -1 at -20, +1 at 20 |
| Going out at night | -1 |
| Staying in | 0 |
With the tutorial on, the case is disabled on day one so it cannot desync the Mentor sequence.
Match the window to the checks you can actually perform. Bait cigarette sellers and you will meet dock fakes. Bait rare-goods sellers before you own the right handbook and you will overpay. Bait water buyers without a testing kit and you sell liability.
The window is also public. Contraband in the case is how a shop raids itself, and a cleared inspection caused by contraband shown in the case pays no Security standing. The contraband and inspection page covers where that stock should have been instead.
What To Bait, And What To Stock First
| What you stock | Who it pulls in |
|---|---|
| Food | Food traffic |
| Household goods | Household traffic |
| Water-related stock | Thirsty customers |
| Hardware | People who came to arm or repair |
| A neon-style sign | Sellers instead of buyers |
A neon sign pulls sellers rather than buyers, which is how you restock without a trip to the dumping grounds. The full catalogue of what can go in the window is on the item list page.
Stock the case first, open second. Anything added after you open waits until tomorrow.
Probably Stolen Rotate Items: Drag, Rotate And Multi-Select Controls
The inventory layer is grid-based, and moving stock is a mouse job:
| Action | Control |
|---|---|
| Rotate the item you are dragging | Mouse wheel up and down |
| Flip the item you are dragging | Middle mouse button |
| Place an item into a different inventory | Shift and drag |
| Select several items at once | Drag a bright white box over them |
| Open the sort menu on a grid inventory | Right-click it |
| Send an owned store item to the trash | Hover it and press Delete |
| Close a container such as the Storage Bay | Double-click it |
| Close the most recently opened item window or paper UI | Escape |
The grid surfaces you move stock between are the Storage Bay, the backpack or satchel, the display case and the outside counter. The Toolbox, sold by Dr. Jackson after day 14, stores tools including the blue and red labelers, and keys 1 to 9 equip the matching tool.
UPDATE 049 raised the window cap from 10 to 25, item windows now hide during customer examine and during shooting and then return, and scanners bring their own UI to the front.
