You win a Culdcept BEGINS match by reaching the target Total Magic for the map and then getting your Cepter back to the castle. Both halves are required: reaching the number while standing on the far side of the board still leaves your rivals time to intercept the trip home.
Culdcept BEGINS How to Win a Match: The Two Conditions
| Condition | What it means in practice |
|---|---|
| Reach the target Total Magic | Total Magic counts the G you hold plus the value of every territory you own, upgrades included — so the goal is normally met by holding territory, not by hoarding cash |
| Get your Cepter back to the castle | The run home is part of the plan, and on a large map it is easy to be intercepted on the way |
| Beat the round limit | A standard board runs 25 rounds, so a slow build that has not reached the goal by then loses on time |
What the Target Number Means
The target differs per map. Campaign stages commonly set 8000 G, and in multiplayer the goal magic can be selected when the map is chosen; a random map can also have its goal set for you. Every story chapter sets its own target on a named board.
Plan the Route Home
On large maps it is easy to reach the magic target on the opposite side of the board and be intercepted on the way back, so mobility Spells exist for exactly this:
- Fly — roll two dice and move the total.
- Word of Recall — warp straight to the castle.
Time Your Spells
Spells are cast before the dice roll. A spell played at the wrong moment is a wasted card, so hold them for the turn that decides the match.
Re-check the Total After Other Players Act
Losing territory changes your Total Magic before you ever reach the castle, and a late upgrade or a defensive card can be the difference between arriving with enough and arriving short. Total Magic breaks down exactly what counts toward the number.
