Culdcept BEGINS online multiplayer is real-time play against players around the world, entered through online matchmaking. There are two ways in — Quick Match, which drops you into a match with a matched opponent, and room matches, which let you set up a room and invite friends to play together.

Culdcept BEGINS Online Multiplayer: Quick Match and Rooms

  • Quick Match puts you straight into a match with a matched opponent, with no setup.
  • Room matches let you set up a room and invite friends to play together. The developer described both as the foundation the mode was built on after launch.
  • There is no cross-play between Nintendo Switch / Nintendo Switch 2 and Steam. Battles between the Nintendo Switch and the Nintendo Switch 2 are supported, so those two versions can face each other, but a Steam player cannot be matched with a Nintendo player.
  • A Nintendo Switch Online membership is required to play online on the Nintendo Switch and Nintendo Switch 2.
  • The online mode does not fill empty seats with AI. In a two-player online match the second slot is for another human player, and AI-versus-AI online matches are not offered. In Solo Battle, autoplay is a control for your own Cepter only.
  • You can inspect an opponent's entire hand at any time during a match, and that is available in online play as well as in solo play.

The Connection Fixes Landed in 1.0.5 and 1.0.6

  • Update 1.0.6, released September 15, 2026 for the Switch and Switch 2 editions, adjusted the disconnection detection during online matches to reduce how often players are dropped mid-match, and fixed crashes around Book editing and the Card Shop.
  • Version 1.0.5 fixed matchmaking and Quick Match room-joining problems.
  • Both updates landed on the Nintendo editions, so the connection handling in the Steam build is not versioned in the same way.

Cathedral Boards Change the Scoring

A board with a Cathedral adds symbols to the economy on top of the usual magic, which changes how a match is scored and how the maps play in online play. The symbol rules matter most when the Total Magic is being read, so it is worth knowing how they are counted before you commit to a map — Total Magic and land chain value explains the numbers behind the score.

The Modes Online Battles Belong To

Online Battle is one of four multiplayer formats in the game, and the others are where you learn the rules and farm. Multiplayer modes compares all four.
